President's Message

Amanda Tooker The Collection Industry in New Zealand has never been regulated by Government and is unlikely to be regulated at any time in the near future. Many professional and trade organisations are regulated in New Zealand. e.g. lawyers, accountants, auctioneers, real estate agents and private investigators. By contrast any individual or company can enter the collections industry without any formal qualifications or licensing as a base requirement.

Invariably the collections industry involves the collection company handling monies collected from debtors, that they have received on behalf of clients. It is absolutely imperative therefore that collections companies commit to an industry accepted 'Code of Ethics' and 'Rules' that are drawn up to ensure that such companies are properly and professionally managed. The NZCA (formerly known as ACB) was established in the early 1990's as an industry lead body to self-regulate the collection industry in New Zealand.

Consequently collection companies that are members of the NZCA can be properly regarded as businesses that have the necessary qualities, expertise and sound business practices that warrant the general business community and the public using their services. Accordingly, we do not believe that the wider commercial interests of the business community and the public are served appropriately if collection businesses that are not members of the NZCA are used.
